The Challenge

Reimagine a traditional playing card system through distinct genre lenses, while maintaining the clarity, hierarchy, and usability expected from a standard deck.

Approach

Assigned each suit a genre—spades (sci-fi), hearts (horror), diamonds (fantasy), and clubs (noir)—and developed a unified visual system inspired by classic Bicycle card design.

Designed each face card and symbol to reflect its genre while preserving consistency across the deck, balancing stylistic variation with a cohesive overall structure.

The Result

Delivered a full 54-card deck that reimagines a standard playing card system through genre, while still functioning as a playable deck.

The system extended beyond the deck, with all face cards exhibited as prints in the Atlantic Gallery’s Imagined Worlds show.
